The selective synergistic effect for heavier Ln(III) ions was found using a combination of Htta and TOPO in [Cmim][TfN], leading to enhanced separability among Ln(III) ions. The extracted Ln(III) species and the extraction constants in the Htta-TOPO system were determined by three-dimensional extraction equilibrium analysis. The selective synergism for heavier Ln(III) ions in the Htta-TOPO system was ascribed to the formation of hydrophobic, charged adducts, such as Ln(tta)(TOPO) and Ln(tta)(TOPO), in [Cmim][TfN].

In the crystallization experiments using the dissolver solution of irradiated fast reactor core fuel, the decontamination factors of liquid impurities were improved by crystal washing. On the other hand, the decontamination factors of solid impurities decreased with several washings because uranyl nitrate hexahydrate is more soluble than the solid impurities in an HNO solution.

Neptunium was co-recovered with U and Pu using tri--butyl phosphate. The experimental results show that Zr was removed with a low HNO concentration scrubbing solution and Tc was decontaminated using a high HNO concentration solution. Other fission products were effectively decontaminated in the system.

Much heat requirement of the HI distillation column largely affects the overall efficiency of hydrogen production. This study explored operating parameters of the distillation column to separate HI efficiently by distillation simulation of HI-H-HO solution of hyper-pseudo-azeotropic composition obtainable in the IS process. First, the vapor-liquid equilibrium database used in the simulation was validated using experimental data reported. Then, effect of the operating parameters, comprising HI mole fraction in distillate, number of column stages, feed location of the column, operating pressure, and feed composition, was analyzed on column properties such as reboiler heat duty. Optimum feed HI mole fraction, number of column stages, and feed location were determined. Feed composition changed tendency of the effect of operating pressure on reboiler heat duty.

The purification rate coefficients of Cs and transuranium elements as liquid impurities were evaluated using these experimental data. These decontamination factors had a tendency to increase with time and were kept virtually constant by 240 min.

This system consists of a compact-sized electron accelerator and an ozone decomposition catalyst, which is MnO. The decomposition of toluene and/or xylene and their mineralization were examined with and without catalytic oxidation for a gas stream at a flow rate of 500 Nm/h. A combined catalyst bed enhanced the decomposition of VOCs and the mineralization of VOC and its irradiation organic byproducts. For example, the mineralization ratio for a 5-ppmv toluene/xylene/air mixture increased from 42% by EB irradiation to 100% by the combination treatment at 9.3 kGy. Furthermore, the yield of CO relative to CO increased from 59% to 85% by this catalytic treatment.

The sorption behavior for a number of metal ions was studied in hydrochloric acid medium. From the batch test of individual metal ion as well as the mixture solution containing equal molar concentration of various metal ions, the sorbent was found to hold selectivity for Au(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) ions only with negligible sorption for other metal ions like Cu(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), and Zn(II). The sorption kinetics was studied at 303, 323, and 338 K and elucidated the order of sorption of Au(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) and from the values of rate constants at different temperatures, the energy of activation has been evaluated. The sorption isotherm study revealed the Langmuir type sorption and from the Langmuir charts the maximum loading capacity of Au(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) has been evaluated.

Ligand contents and acid capacities of the resulting cation exchangers were ca. 2 mmol/g and ca. 4 mmol/g for the filamentary fiber and for the non-woven cloth, respectively. The selectivity sequence of nonwoven cloth shape for dialect metal ions is Mg(II) Ca(II) Co(II) Zn(II) Cd(II) Ni(II) Pb(II) Cu(II). Capacities in mmol/g at pH 5 were Ca(II) 0.91, Mg(II) 0.98, Cd(II) 1.5, Ni(II) 1.5, Pb(II) 1.6, Cu(II) 1.8. Column mode for filamentary fiber shape revealed that breakthrough capacities for Cu(II) (ca. 1 mmol/g) were not dependent on flow rates up to 200 300 h in space velocity.

The experiments showed that the energy was related with the chemical structure and roughly estimated from rate constants for reactions with OH radicals. The cost analysis revealed that the unification of a self-shielding electron accelerator with a reactor could reduce the capital cost for an electron-beam system. Electron-beam technology is a promising method for the treatment of VOCs.
